Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port introduces new concession scheme for container feeder vessels

The Board of Trustees of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has greenlit an innovative Concession Scheme aimed at enhancing vessel calls and providing frequent and seamless connections to the ex-im trade of the region. This scheme is tailored for vessels under foreign run operating between Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) of SMPK and select Foreign Transhipment Ports of Colombo, Singapore, Port Klang, and any Indian Transhipment Port, highlighted an official communique.

Commencing on May 1, 2024, this two-year valid scheme, subject to review after one year, promises significant benefits for vessel operators and stakeholders alike. Under the scheme, vessels calling at HDC with a volume of 601-1,000 TEUs per single call will enjoy a generous 20% concession on VRC, while those with 1,001 TEUs and above will receive an even greater 30% concession.

It’s important to note the following:

*The scheme does not apply to container vessels already benefiting from the Concession Scheme for Direct Services sanctioned on December 15, 2023.

* Only container vessels meeting the specified volume threshold per single call are eligible for this scheme.

* Eligibility extends solely to container vessels under foreign run, traversing between select Foreign Transshipment Ports.

Objective and benefits

a) Enhanced Connectivity: The primary aim is to bolster HDC’s connectivity, ensuring seamless routing for ex-im trade.

b) Preventing Volume Diversion: By offering competitive incentives, the scheme aims to retain volume within SMPK.

c) Increased Container Volume: Anticipated increase in container volume will not only benefit the port but also stimulate regional economic activity.

d) Market Competitiveness: By fostering an environment of competitiveness, SMPK seeks to position itself as a premier port, attracting more business and investment.

e)  Efficient Resource Allocation: Encouraging vessel operators to bring higher parcel sizes for optimum utilisation of port resources and enhancing operational efficiency.

The introduction of this Concession Scheme underscores SMPK’s commitment to fostering growth, competitiveness and efficiency within the maritime sector. The port remains dedicated to exploring innovative solutions to further elevate its stature in the global trade landscape, the communique emphasised.
