JNPA announces electric ferry boat service connecting Mumbai
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced the launch of an electric ferry boat service from JNPA to Mumbai commencing in January 2025. The project aims at making available a zero-emission environment-friendly ferry boat for the public. The service is backed by the Harit Sagar, or “Green Port”, initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, that focuses on sustainable port operations and reducing the environmental impact. It aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2047 and enhance renewable energy usage by 60% across the Major Ports.
The electric ferry boat will significantly shorten the journey between Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) by 20 minutes to about 30-40 minutes. It also prioritises comfort with air-conditioned seating arrangements, thereby improving the travel experience.
These fast and efficient ferry boats can comfortably accommodate 20-24 passengers at a time, offering a seamless travel experience with an easy online ticketing system and check-in options. Tickets will continue to be issued by JNPA. Operating from the Gateway of India to Jawaharlal Nehru Port during fair weather, and from Bhaucha Dhakka to Jawaharlal Nehru Port during the foul season, these boats promise to make commuting more convenient and hassle-free.
This new initiative is a significant step towards sustainable and efficient transportation, offering a faster, eco-friendly and more comfortable travel experience for passengers to and from JNPA, highlighted a release.
