JNPA, MbPA & upcoming Vadhvan projected to become world’s largest port cluster

A decade from now, by 2034, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port are together projected to become the world’s largest port cluster.

This strategic development is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime trade capacity, positioning the region as a pivotal global logistics hub, highlighted a communique.

JNPA has consistently been at the forefront of transforming India’s port operations. Since its inception in 1989, it has grown to become the largest container port in India. The port recently achieved a historic milestone by recording it’s highest-ever throughput of 6.43 million TEUs in the fiscal year 2023-24. Moreover, JNPA has consistently handled over 6 million TEUs annually in the last couple of years.

Construction of the mega Vadhvan Port should begin next year and the first phase of 10 million TEUs will be ready by 2029. When both phases are ready by 2034, the port will have 9 container terminals with 24 million TEU capacity approx. It will also have 4 multipurpose terminals, 4 liquid terminals, 1 RoRo terminal and 1 terminal for the Coast Guard.

Importantly, Vadhvan will be among the 10 largest ports in the world with a water depth of 20 metres that will be capable of handling the biggest of modern container vessels.
