Blaze on  MV Maersk Frankfurt doused

The major fire on MV Maersk Frankfurt, off the Karwar (Karnataka) coast, which erupted late last week, has been extinguished, with efforts ongoing to ensure the vessel remains at sea to mitigate risks to the coastline, according to the Coast Guard. Coast Guard ships Samudra Prahari and Sachet led the efforts, with support from Albattros 5 and ETV Water Lily. SMIT Salvers’ initial team embarked the distressed vessel which is currently 13 nautical miles west of New Mangalore and heading towards deeper waters. The MV Maersk Frankfurt, which was carrying 1,154 containers with dangerous cargo such as benzene and sodium cyanate, caught fire 102 nautical miles off the coast of Goa. The ship was en route from Mundra in Gujarat to Colombo in Sri Lanka when the fire broke out, resulting in the death of one crew member, said a report.
