MOL to deploy world’s first ammonia-fuelled Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that MOL and its wholly-owned subsidiary MOL Chemical Tankers Pte. Ltd (MOLCT), along with Belgium-based CMB.TECH NV, have decided to jointly own and charter a total of nine Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers that can run on ammonia, a zero-emission fuel. These will be the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers, as per a communique.

Amid the trend toward decarbonis ation, ammonia is drawing worldwide attention as a next-generation clean energy source, and the ocean shipping industry is accelerating its moves to strategically utilise ammonia as a fuel. The MOL Group also intends to adopt ammonia to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. MOL will continue to pursue these initiatives and contribute to the realisation of a decarbonised society, the release added.
