Merchandise exports contract by 1 pc to $38.01 bn in Dec.

India’s merchandise exports contracted by 1% year-on-year to $38.01 billion in December 2024 amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Significantly, electronics exports rose 35.11% to a 24-month high of $3.58 billion in December. For the April-December period, cumulative merchandise exports rose 1.6% to $321.71 billion, while imports climbed 5.1% to $532.48 billion. In the services sector, exports grew by 3.2% year-on-year to $32.66 billion in December, while imports rose by 11.9% to $17.5 billion, leaving a services trade surplus of $15.16 billion. Meanwhile, imports grew 4.9% year-on-year to $59.95 billion but fell by 6% vis à vis November’s revised figure of $63.86 billion. The import data figure for the April-November 2024 period also saw a downward revision of $17.5 billion to $469.3 billion, from $486.8 billion, as per a report.
