Mega container vessel docks at Vizhinjam Port
One of the world’s largest and most fuel-efficient green container ships, MSC Türkiye, docked at Vizhinjam International Seaport on April 9, 2025, marking a milestone in the journey of India’s first deepwater transhipment port. It was received at the port with a water salute. Hailing it as a landmark in the country’s maritime history, Kerala Minister for Ports, Mr V. N. Vasavan, said this marks the first-ever docking of the giant container ship at an Indian port as well as in South Asia.
The two-year-old vessel measures 399.9 m in length, 61.3 m in width and 33.5 m in depth, and is currently sailing under the flag of Liberia. It can load about 24,346 TEUs, making it one of the world’s largest container ships. The arrival boosts Vizhinjam’s role as a key hub on the Asia-Europe shipping route, ushering in a new era of connectivity and economic growth.
