DGFT notifies restrictions on platinum imports

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has issued a notification restricting the import policy of platinum. As per the notification, the import policy of certain categories of platinum has been revised from Free to Restricted, except for platinum alloy containing 99% or more purity by weight of platinum, which will continue to be freely importable. The decision to restrict platinum imports by the world’s second largest gold consumer comes as some importers were masking gold imports as platinum to avoid higher import duties. This change introduces import restrictions on unwrought platinum, platinum powder and other forms of platinum, requiring importers to obtain government approval, as per a report.
