Indo-Bangla connectivity projects likely to see delay: Minister

India-Bangladesh connectivity projects, including the Agartala-Akhaura rail link and the Maitree Bridge, may face delays due to political upheaval and a change in government in Bangladesh, according to Tripura’s Transport Minister Mr Sushanta Chowdhury.  He recently expressed uncertainty about the start dates for these nearly completed projects. The Agartala-Chittagong flight was to commence soon, but it has become uncertain now, he said. The Agartala-Akhaura rail link, spanning 12.24 km and costing Rs 972.52 crore, is designed to enhance trade between India’s North-East and Bangladesh. The Indian side, of 5.46 km track, has been completed, while 98% of the 6.78 km track in Bangladesh is also finished. The Maitree Bridge was inaugurated earlier, and movements of passenger and goods-laden trucks were expected to begin soon. However, with the recent political instability, the timeline for these activities remains uncertain, said a report.
