Shipowners order 14 hydrogen derivative-powered vessels in March

Shipowners ordered 14 new vessels capable of operating on either methanol or ammonia fuel in March, according to new figures from analyst DNV, ending a dry spell which saw just a single hydrogen derivative-powered vessel on order since the beginning of 2025. Twelve of the ships ordered last month, all of which are dual fuel and, therefore, able to also run on conventional fossil-based shipping fuels, are set to be capable of using methanol fuels, pushing the total number of methanol-capable vessels either in operation or on order to over 400. And a further two ammonia-powered vessels were ordered during the month, as per a report.
