Major Ports handling more coastal cargo 

The state-owned Major Ports are handling more coastal cargo, while the non-major ports (private ports) are showing a strong preference for export-import cargo, according to government traffic data. Major Ports handled 72.04 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in May 2024, posting a 5.85 per cent increase over May 2023. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, overseas cargo handled by the 12 Major Ports rose 7.27 per cent to 55.86 mt while coastal cargo saw a modest increase of 1.20 per cent at 16.17 mt, according to the data. In comparison, non-major ports recorded a modest 1.55 per cent increase in the total cargo handled in May at 65.44 mt from a year earlier. Of this, overseas cargo accounted for 55.78 mt, posting a growth of 8.25 per cent while coastal cargo plunged 25.21 per cent to 9.66 mt, as per a report.
