India seeks global partnerships for methanol, ammonia as ship fuel

India has sought collaborations for all new technologies and will explore the potential of using methanol and ammonia as ship fuels with the shipping industry stakeholders, said Mr Bhushan Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, on the sidelines of the Singapore Maritime Week. India is taking the lead in green shipping, he said, adding that hydrogen production will become a reality by about 2027. India is setting up hydrogen centres at Kandla, Paradip and VOC ports. Land at Kandla has been awarded to Reliance, L&T and Welspun Group for setting up hydrogen centres. The next step is to replace the heavy fuel in ships. India wants to make methanol, ammonia and hydrogen. It is exploring all these possibilities and taking a lead in green shipping worldwide, which is also the objective of the IMO, Mr Kumar added, as per a report.
