Exporters seemingly facing problems as B’desh eats cargo space through Delhi airport

Tonnes of Bangladesh-made garments transiting Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi are cornering space in aircraft bound for Europe and the US, leaving less room for Indian exporters, it is learnt. Due to the geopolitics-related disruption in cargo movement via the Red Sea, Dhaka’s garment exports to third countries have been routed by air via Delhi since February 2023. Earlier, it was only through Kolkata airport. From April to December 2023, Delhi airport handled 260,000 tonnes of export cargo, with Bangladesh accounting for just 5,000 tonnes or less than 2 per cent. However, in the March 2024 quarter, of the 90,000 tonnes handled, Bangladesh’s share was 8,000 tonnes or 9 per cent. This led to congestion and spikes in air freight rates by nearly 300 per cent, say exporters, as per a report.
