India, Russia discuss the Northern Sea Route for trade

India and Russia have discussed the potential of the Northern Sea Route as a significant trade avenue for major commodities, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. Union Minister Mr Sarbananda Sonowal was in Russia last week, where he met with Mr AO Chekunkov, Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic. Mr Chekunkov emphasised that cooperation with India was a priority for his Ministry, in all areas of mutual interest, and pointed out that the Northern Sea Route has abundant potential for transporting commodities like coking coal, oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilisers. In the Russian Far East, these products are abundant, and eastern India is developing the necessary infrastructure to handle them, he said, as per a report.
