Wheat export ban repeal unlikely

Lifting the ban on wheat exports is unlikely, said Mr Rohit Kumar Singh, Consumer Affairs Secretary, while adding that shipments of the foodgrain through diplomatic channels would be considered on a case-to-case basis. The government is supplying some quantity of wheat to a few countries like Nepal and Bhutan via a government-to-government trade arrangement. Citing reasons for continuing the export ban, Additional Secretary of the Food Ministry, Mr Subodh Kumar said that India is not a traditional wheat-exporting nation, though some shipments have been made in the last few years due to surplus supplies, as per a report.
