India can export an additional 1 mt of sugar this year: Secy

India has a cushion to export an additional 1 million tonnes (mt) of sugar this year if the domestic output reaches the estimated 33.6 million tonnes, said Additional Secretary of the Food Ministry Mr Subhod Kumar. He pointed out that sugar availability is comfortable in the country even as the total sugar production is pegged lower at 33.6 million tonnes in the ongoing 2022-23 marketing year (October-September). Sugar production stood at 35.9 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year. Next month, India will get concrete data on sugar production and will then take a call on further exports. Sugar production touched 24.7 million tonnes by February of the 2022-23 marketing year. The government has allowed export of 6 million tonnes of the sweetener this year, as per a report.
