DPA achieves fastest 50 MMT  in cargo handling

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has announced that it has achieved its fastest 50 MMT in cargo handling! “A milestone that reflects our commitment to excellence and efficiency in maritime operations,” it emphasised in a communique.

Amidst the highly volatile and uncertain situation building up in the Middle East and the continuing tensions for the shipping industry due to the recent attacks in the Red Sea, there have been significant changes in the ship routes, that have impacted vessel calls at many Asian ports including India. This has led to increased freight rates and even forced some ports to lower their traffic projections. Despite this scenario, DPA has once again come up with a sterling performance in cargo handling, crossing the 50 MMT mark on August 7, 2024. Cargoes that significantly contributed to the port reaching this landmark were coal, liquid chemicals, edible oils, phosphoric acid, POL, iron scrap, iron ore, timber , crude oil (at Vadinar), maize, bentonite, salt & silica sand and foodgrains. DPA had surpassed this figure last fiscal on August 18.

The Chairman, DPA, Mr Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, congratulated the Deputy Chairman, Traffic Manager and his team, as well as the HoDs for their valuable contribution in making this happen. He also praised the trade fraternity for their continued support to the port, which helped it reach this milestone. He stressed that while the port remains focused on rendering qualitative services to the trade, it is also committed to taking appropriate steps to ensure that the services and facilities remain continuously available to port users. The Chairman added that the recently launched SAAGAR scheme and the incentives for handling cargo in stream are expected to give further confidence to port users and thereby boost throughput, which is poised to hit an all-time high of 145 MMT, the communique added.
