Afghanistan shifts focus to Iran’s ports for trade, access to Indian Ocean Region

Afghanistan is shifting its focus from Karachi Port to Iran’s Bandar Abbas and Chabahar ports for trade and access to the Indian Ocean Region amid fast deteriorating ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as per reports. China had transported goods to Afghanistan recently via Bandar Abbas port. While Bandar Abbas is a nodal point for the INSTC connecting India with Russia via Iran, India is using Chabahar port to send humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and wants to position the port to trade with Central Asia via Afghanistan. India, Iran and Afghanistan have a tripartite agreement in place for the use of Chabahar port, the aim being to facilitate hassle-free transport of goods between India and Afghanistan via the port which is strategically located in Iran’s southeast, the reports said.
