Export duty on onion withdrawn from April

India has withdrawn the 20% export duty on onions, effective from April 1, 2025, communicated through a notification issued by the Department of Revenue based on the recommendation of the Department of Consumer Affairs. The move is expected to provide significant relief to onion exporters. Despite the export restrictions, India managed to export substantial quantities of the bulb. In FY 2023-24, total onion exports reached 17.17 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), while FY 2024-25 (up to March 18, 2025) recorded exports of 11.65 LMT. Notably, monthly export volumes surged from 0.72 LMT in September 2024 to 1.85 LMT by January 2025, indicating sustained global demand.  Rabi onion production this year is estimated at 227 LMT, an 18% increase over last year’s 192 LMT. Rabi onions constitute 70-75% of India’s total onion production, as per a report.
