Export of 1 MT sugar allowed

India has allowed the export of 1 million tonnes (MT) of sugar in the ongoing 2024-25 (October-September) season, after taking into consideration domestic availability. Exports of the sweetener have been banned since the last season. This new step would ensure price stability, support 5 crore farmers’ families and 5 lakh sugar mills workers, and strengthen the sector, Food Minister Mr Pralhad Joshi said in a social media post in X. The export quota of 1 MT has been pro-rated among those sugar mills which operated in at least one sugar season amongst the last three sugar seasons by taking into account their average production of sugar in the previous three operational sugar seasons — 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24, according to a Food Ministry notification. India exported 6 MT of sugar in the 2022-23 season and since then the government has not allocated any quota for export, as per a report.
