Designation of the Mediterranean Sea as Emission Control Area (ECA) from May next year
A new regulation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has designated the Mediterranean Sea as an Emission Control Area (ECA), which will be coming into effect on May 1, 2025. The designation means that as of May 1, 2025, all vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea will be required to use marine fuel with a sulphur content of 0.1% (MDO), instead of the current level of 0.5% (VLSFO), informed a communique.
