ICD-Ankleshwar posts new record in exports during Feb.

Already on to 169 pc growth this fiscal

The Container Corporation of India’s (CONCOR) inland container depot (ICD)-Ankleshwar has recorded its highest-ever exports, at 286 TEUs, in February 2010, surpassing its previous best of 235 TEUs registered in September 2009.

Since April 2009, ICD-Ankleshwar has moved 85 rakes and handled an ex-im throughput of 3,106 TEUs up to February this year, posting a growth of 169 per cent compared to the throughput of 1,153 TEUs in the corresponding period of 2008-09.

CONCOR will be shortly inducting a reach stacker at the facility. This, along with its array of existing handling equipment, should help reduce operating time and give a major fillip to ex-im operations.

The facility has been of immense benefit to exporters and importers, especially after the commencement of rail operations in October 2007. It is the only dry port in South Gujarat located close to production/consumption centres like GIDC-Ankleshwar, Valia, Panoli, Bharuch, Jhagadia, Rajpipla and Dahej.

ICD-Ankleshwar provides facilities like handling and temporary storage of import/export cargo, laden/empty containers, for Customs clearance, home consumption of imports, warehousing and onward transit for exports.

CONCOR’s decision to provide scheduled train services for exports linking the ICD to gateway ports such as JN Port, has put it on the fast track. This has greatly benefited shippers and consignees like Piramal Glass Ltd, Gulshan Poly Oils, United Phosphorus, Grasim Industries and Godrej, to name a few.

It has been seen that dry ports located in close proximity to production/consumption bases, attract significant volumes of cargo and, in the long run, act as catalysts for regional economic development. This being so, CONCOR’s ICD-Ankleshwar too is poised to become a very significant dry port of South Gujarat in future.
