Iran plans direct shipping line between  Chabahar & major Indian ports

Iran is planning to launch a direct shipping line between the country’s Southeastern port of Chabahar and major Indian ports, announced Mr Akbar Torkan, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Free and Special Economic Zones, as per reports in the Iranian media.

Direct shipping lines and launch of new jetties for berthing of ships larger than 1,500-TEU will take place in Chabahar soon, it was emphasised. This is the most economical route for Central Asia and Afghanistan in gaining access to the open seas, and its ongoing infrastructure development will see the port emerge as an important centre for transit of goods to neighbouring countries, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Subcontinent, he added, the reports said.

India is involved in the development of Chabahar port, which is located 72 km west of Pakistan’s Gwadar port, as it holds immense strategic and economic significance for the country.
