CWC should double storage capacity by 2023: Goyal

Union Minister for Food & Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Railways and Commerce & Industry, Mr Piyush Goyal, this week reviewed the modernisation plan of Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC).

He said that CWC should double its warehouse storage capacity by the end of 2023 and achieve a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore by financial year 2024-25. At present, CWC’s warehouse storage capacity is 125 lakh metric tonnes (LMT).

The Minister stressed that tariff rationalisation and setting up of warehouses should be done independently by CWC without any bureaucratic interference. He said that maximum powers of decision-making for operations should be delegated to the CWC. He also asked CWC to focus on building cold chain storage in the country on priority basis, especially more cold chain facilities for storage of onion, potato and tomato in coordination with NAFED.

He instructed CWC to carry out safety audit for fire, earthquakes burglary and accidents at all its warehouses regularly.

CWC should build modern silos for wheat and rice storage all over the country so that maximum grains could be stored for longer periods, he said.

The Minister also suggested that CWC should prepare a masterplan for upgradation of all its 423 warehouses. It should do warehouse/storage gap analysis for agricultural produce and accordingly prepare plans with the help of architects and experts, he added, as per a release.
