India trebles sugar production

India’s sugar production in the current season has trebled to 14.1 lakh tonnes (lt) till November 15, 2020 as compared to 4.84 lt produced in the same period last year, said the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). The higher production is mainly due to an increase in the number of sugar mills crushing sugarcane at present. As compared to 127 mills during the corresponding period last year, 274 mills have commenced operations already this year, said a report.

Mills in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are reportedly leading the way in crushing. There is need to export 60-70 lt of sugar in the current season and policy decisions on export subsidy and creation of buffer stock are awaited, as per the report.
