Cargo handling capacity of Major Ports seeing steady increase: Minister


The Government of India has taken concerted efforts in the direction of expansion and modernisation of the Major Ports of the country.  Infrastructure development and capacity augmentation of the ports is an ongoing process and involves construction of new berths and terminals, mechanisation of existing berths and terminals, capital dredging for deepening of draughts for attracting large vessels in port channels, development of road and rail connectivity, etc. As a result, the cargo handling capacity of the Major Ports has gone up to 1,534.91 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) as on March 31, 2020. 


This information was given by the Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge), Mr Mansukh Mandaviya, in the Rajya Sabha in a written reply, informed a communiqué.
