SCI wins ‘Most Compassionate Employer of Indian Seafarers’ award


The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) was conferred the ‘Most Compassionate Employer of Indian Seafarers’ award by the NMDC Central Committee at the ‘Grand Finale’ of the 56th National Maritime Day Celebrations 2019 held on April 5, 2019 at the Y. B. Chavan Auditorium, Mumbai. The PSU ‘Navaratna’ was recognised for being the pioneer and for continuing to make special efforts for the welfare and development of Indian seafarers.


Mr Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman, Mumbai Port Trust, was the Chief Guest and Mr P. A. Jennings, Chairman, International Group of P&I Clubs, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.


Capt. Anoop Kumar Sharma, C&MD, SCI, said, "I am glad to note that we have been once again bestowed with this award this year. SCI has been and shall remain to be the most compassionate employer of Indian seafarers, which is a proud legacy. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate all the employees of SCI for the award."


The date April 5, 1919 remains a memorable day in India’s maritime history, when the Indian vessel S. S. Loyalty of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company sailed from the then Bombay with about 250 passengers and 1,952 tonnes of cargo for London through Marseilles. Subsequently, the year 1964 saw the celebration of the first Maritime Day in India.


The theme for this year’s National Maritime Day Celebrations, ‘100 years since S. S. Loyalty’, is in commemoration of the historic event, said a release.
