Shipping Ministry gets non-government professional as Joint Secretary through lateral entry process

Mr Bhushan Kumar has been appointed as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping, as per an official announcement made last week. He is among the nine non-government professionals recommended to be inducted in the bureaucracy as Joint Secretaries through the lateral entry process initiated by the government, it is learnt.

The appointments also include Suman Prasad Singh in the Department of Road Transport and Highways.

The lateral appointees are likely to have a term of three-years from the date of joining, which could be extended to five years depending on their performance. The nine appointees are expected to join in the next two months, reports said.

In June last year, the Ministry of Personnel had invited applications for Joint Secretary-level posts through the lateral entry mode. These posts are usually manned by officers of Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, Indian Revenue Service, etc. However, the government, while initiating the lateral entry process, had opined that it was essential for specialists to be inducted into the system through this mode on fixed-term contracts, reports added.
