New Mangalore Port woos coffee trade ahead of plucking season

As part of its business promotion initiative, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) organised a business meet at Purple Palms Resort, Kushalnagar on January 6, 2017. The purpose of the meet was to interact with the Kodagu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, coffee exporters, coffee curers and logistics service providers of Madikeri, Kushalnagar, Chikmagalur and Hassan region in the run up to the forthcoming coffee plucking season.

Major coffee exporters, coffee curers, logistics service providers, members of the Kodagu Chamber and representatives from the Coffee Board attended the meet and had a fruitful interaction on routing their cargo through the Port. Mr Chidvilas, past President of the Kodagu Chamber, welcomed the gathering and asked the participants to interact with the Port authorities on issues, if any, to be addressed for the smooth handling of their cargo through NM Port. Mr P. C. Parida, Chairman of NMPT, while briefing on the infrastructure additions and the ongoing developmental works at the Port, called on the trade to avail of the advantages of New Mangalore Port, which is just 156 km from Kushalnagar, for moving their cargo. Mr B. N. Prakash, President of the Kodagu Chamber, was also present on the occasion.

It was highlighted that container traffic is picking up at the Port in the current financial year (2016-17), reaching 66,848 TEUs up to December, as against 53,874 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous year. The growth rate and the rise in container traffic was attributed to the increasing frequency of container vessels, enhanced infrastructure like additional container storage yards, handling equipment, and simplified documentation procedures in the Port and Customs, said a release.
